Great Expectations 2

The hype. The publicity stunts. The buzz of good word-of-mouth. The accolades and the controversies. The sequel to Great Expectations.

LE GRAND VOYAGE

Haaa... starting the new year with a good sign.

Watching my first movie free, courtesy of Singapore Film Society.

Read the plot. Sounds like my cup of tea. A coming-of-age story of a pair estranged father and son on a road trip.

NORTH COUNTRY

What a boring title but it is a my all-time favourite movie genre, the all-woman show. Corny and manipulative but always got my heart.

Good performances throughout, judging from the trailer. It has 2 Golden Globe nominations for acting. Plus, it is based on a true story that is an important chapter in American law book - sexual harrassment at work.

Did I also say that movies based on true stories also got my heart quite easily?

Expected Rating: B- (blame it partly on the boring title)

MATCH POINT

From the trailer, it doesn't look a bit like a Woody Allen's movie. It is however being compared to his CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS, a more serious movie but still has some humourous sparkle. Not the least my favourite Woody Allen movie anyway.

Somehow, many say this is one of the better work from Woddy Allen lately. Anyone saw MELINDA & MELINDA and HOLLYWOOD ENDING? Well, I think Mr Allen would be contented that finally some people are interested in talking his movie.

Many good reviews so why not? Anyway, always love Woody Allen's sense of humour but I guess that is sparse in this one.

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN

I cannot believe that this movie is actually making its way to Singapore shores!

Sweeping almost all the critics' awards Best Film, it is all set to be nominated for Oscar Best Picture. Winning it is almost a sure thing unless Oscar chooses to be conservative.

As a firm supporter for Ang Lee, I really hope this movie will win him a Best Director award. The first Chinese to win. Of course, it will be good that this movie will win too.

I bet it will not. Oscar has a history of trying to be different from the Golden Globes.

Anyway, I will buy the DVD because I doubt the movie will be screened here uncut. I hope I will be wrong.

Previously banned because there is mention of the assasination of the Malaysian Prime Minister. That was like three years ago? Anyway, blame it on the proximity of our country to Malaysia.

I want to see this, partly because it is "previously banned". Partly also because I think it is going to be a very funny show.

Ben Stiller hardly fails to make me laugh.

Political thriller is hardly my cup of tea. Too serious and too heavy and too mind-boggling at times.

CACHÉ (HIDDEN)

Listed as a possible Oscar contender so that explains why this movie is within my radar. Read raving reviews and from them, it seems like your level of appreciation varies directly with your interpretation of the movie. I either hate or love this kind of movie. Coming from the director who earlier made us sick with that French perverted THE PIANO TEACHER, I think I better be very wary of his latest mind-boggler.

Scared to bits by THE THIN RED LINE. It has the true definition of the word,"arty-farty". Beautifully filmed but much about nothing. And very sleep-inducing.

THE NEW WORLD clocks in a whooping 150 min! Old habits die hard?

If you see this here, that means I am watching it afterall. It is getting good word-of-mouth. But it could be because Terrence Mallick is so respected by many.

MURDERBALL

A surprise nominee at the Oscar's list of nominated documentary features. It is coming to town and to be precise, it is coming THE PICTUREHOUSE, my all-time beloved art movie theatre.

Heard very good reviews about this documentary, though I also heard the dialogue can be rather vulgar and coming from quadriplegics, it is hard to decide should you empathsize with them. I guess herein lies the emotional conflict the documentary makers want to arouse in audience.

I say bring it on, man!

LADY IN THE WATER did not receive very enthusiastic reviews. Well, so did THE VILLAGE. But, I think the twist in THE VILLAGE is smart.

Hmmm... Wondering what the director will appear as in his latest offering. He was last seen only in his reflection, playing a sheriff.

SOPHIE SCHOLL: THE FINAL DAYS

It is a choice between THE BEAT MY HEART SKIPPED and this. I read more about the former but decided to catch this instead.

You see. When I am deciding on the movies I want to see, the accolades really count. THE BEAT MY HEART SKIPPED won 8 Caesars and SOPHIE SCHOLL only an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film.

Oscars carry more weight. Call me sucking up to them or blind faith but so far its taste has not really put me off yet.

I am over with Cannes, Berlin and what-you-have. Their preference is way out of my league.

What is the plot about? I am not so sure. But Uncle Roger makes it sound so watchable.

THE NATIVITY STORY

Some said the movie is flat-out mediocre and even boring. I believe the remarks come from Christians and Catholics. Adaptating from the Bible; geee, guess it is one of the toughest jobs around? Your critics come from all over the world.

For me, it will be a very enriching experience for me. Since I do not know much about Jesus, let alone His mother, Virgin Mary. This movie is all about her. I am keen to know about the events before the birth of Christ.

BLOOD DIAMOND

Not to be mistaken as an actioner.

Coming from Edward Zwick, it has to be more than just brawn. Just read the plot outline and it did not interest me a bit.

Watching it because it is a forerunner in next year's Oscar race. After THE DEPARTED and with this one, Leonardo is destined to shed his image of a pretty boy looks and evolves into a tougher leading man. He is nominated for two performances at the Golden Globes and definitely he stands a very good chance to be nominated again at the Oscars.

Still, I have to say this again. The story doesn't interest me and so did THE LAST SAMURAI's. The movie did not impress me too. Hence, I am not looking forward to BLOOD DIAMOND. And dear oh dear, it will run for bloody 132 minutes. Pun not intended.

Going to skip ETERNAL SUMMER since it is censored. Even for a few split seconds matter to me. Oh well. Are Taiwanese movies on the rise now? ETERNAL SUMMER seems to be gathering rather good word-of-mouth of late.

DA-YU is also a Golden Horse contender in the category of Best Newcomer and Best Screenplay.

Like the title already and hopefully the story is good too.

This will mark my return to Chinese movies after disappointing AFTER THIS OUR EXILE and that ridiculous THE CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER.

Wish me luck! Still ... once bitten twice shy.

Saw the trailer of this Brit cop comedy in the cinema. Refreshing to see another kind of comedy, mixing cop action and gore.

Director Edgar Wright is the one behind that cult comedy SHAUN OF THE DEAD. Though it did not come to our cinemas but saw the trailer online. Quite funny.

Rotten Tomatoes.com rates HOT FUZZ pretty well. I got a good feeling HOT FUZZ will not disappoint.

HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX

Hands up who is really going ga-ga over the latest instalment of the Harry Potter movies.

I am no fan of the franchise. I find the stories too complicated to follow and so I am just contended with the SFX wizardy.

The poster looks good to me. The cast looked awkward while they undergo hormone changes in the previous movie. In this one, Daniel Radcliffe looks like a hunk-mini. This is after his little 'over-exposure' for his last stage play. Girls, you are warned, get ready for your raging hormones. Damn. Even Rupert Grint looks better in this one.

Of course, Emma Watson is blossomed fully into a little lday that is getting ready to kick some ass.

Oh. Have I digressed? Seriously, I do not remember what happened in the previous Harry Potter movie. I can't even remember it is "Harry Potter and what?".

How many more Harry Potter movies to go until HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS? Really, I don't know and I don't care. I can't shake off the franchise. It will feel like I have started something but did not finish it.

LA VIE EN ROSE

Yet another biopic of a singer. This time, the subject matter is Edith Piaf, a famous French singer. Of course, I have heard nothing of her.

Reviews have been very positive and one critic is so impressed by the female lead that an Oscar nomination is well-deserving.

I am watching this free, courtesy of Singapore Film Society. I guess I have nothing to lose. Foreign films easily go into my good books. Hope this one will not let me down.

I am looking forward to HAIRSPRAY though I still think John Travolta in drag is not entirely a good idea.

Yes. Talking rats are not a first but judging from the amiable animation, the rats sure look so adorable! Mark that scene of the rat begging a young chef not to throw him into the river.

From the creators of CARS, FINDING NEMO and MONSTERS INC., I have very high expectation of this latest animation from Pixar.

Let's see if Pixar can once again "cook up" a storm at the box office and win our hearts again.

881

Loated pretentiously highbrow mood piece 4:30, so I was not particulary looking forward to Royston Tan's latest work. Though the trailer promises obiang-esque fun.

Today, we know 881 is hot on every Singaporean's lips. It reminds me of Ang Lee's gay family drama, THE WEDDING BANQUET, which started with some buzz but escalated into a craze. At one time, The Picturehouse even included a show as early as 9.30 am to cater to more audience.

A walk down memory lane no less. 881 should bring back fond memories for me too.

The buzz is unmistakable. I am watching this not for patriotic reasons (it opens on National Day though) but there must be something extraordinary about this that keeps drawing audience to the theatres. Running for almost a month now, and tickets are still selling fast.

By the way, this is the only movie I watch after I bought the OST. Oh, love the OST already.

Always love Michael Moore's documentary films. FAHRENHEIT 9/11 was lambasted by critics but I still love it. BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE, of course, was everyone's favourite.

Really. What Michael Moore tries to say in his latest no-holds-barred documentary is secondary to me. I know he is going to tell a very captivating story, fabricated or not. Well, being a documentary, I hope it has a lot of truth in it. You see, FAHRENHEIT 9/11, was accused of presenting twisted facts and half-truths.

For the record, Michael Moore's new target is the American health care industry.

The power of protest should not be underestimated especially when audience refused to watch the cut version and threatened to fly to other nearby countries to see the uncut version.

My guess is Singapore is trying to send an message to all, especially people overseas, that we are not an uptight conservative small country. We welcome all diversities.

Ok, I have yakked for too long. Do I expect myself to like LUST,CAUTION? Not really, to be true. The 155 running time scares me a bit and BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN is a gay romance told half-heartedly.

Strangely, given how the Oscars love Paul Haggis (he is the only person in history to have written two Best Pictures back to back), IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH is snubbed at the recent Golden Globes. Still, for the early Oscar buzz, I am catching it.

The musical is already drawing comparions with MOULIN ROGUE! That is a good sign. All the songs featured will be the evergreen classics of The Beatles. There will also be references after references to The Beatles.

Just bought the OST from Gramophone and the lady over the counter told me she loved the movie a lot! "Very colourful!" she said.

I can hardly wait to see it too. Beautiful visuals and songs reinterpreted are what get me so worked up. By the way, a check with wikipedia reveals that ACROSS THE UNIVERSE is actually a Beatles song. Haven't heard of it though.
