Great Expectations 3

The hype. The publicity stunts. The buzz of good word-of-mouth. The accolades and the controversies. The follow-up to Great Expectations 2.

AUSTRALIA

Have not seen the trailer. Have not read any review. But already I have enough faith in Baz Luhrmann to want to see this badly.

One radio DJ commented that the movie is the Australian version of PEARL HARBOUR. That doesn't sound like a compliment but it is Baz Luhrmann, so I am not backing out.

MILK

Another mainstream gay movie?

This time it is a biopic of Harvey Milk. He was California's first openly gay elected official who was assassinated.

The 1984 Oscar-winning documentary, THE TIMES OF HARVEY MLIK, was based on him and now a film about him, exploring the more little-known intimate aspects of the man.

Sean Penn is already getting Oscar voters excited with his performance. Gus Van Sant directs.

Understandably, the movie was given little publicity in Singapore. Not that I am complaining but I just hope nothing is censored.

CHANGELING

For overlooking her performance in A MIGHTY HEART last year, the Oscars finally gave her a nod in CHANGELING.

Interestingly, CHANGELING was the first Clint Eastwood movie to get Oscars voters excited but his the other movie GRAN TORINO soon had stronger vibes to be running for Oscars. And yes, the old man has two Oscar-worthy movies under his belt again. But look how the table has turned. CHANGELING was up for 3 Oscars but GRAN TORINO was entirely overlooked.

I shall not digress. This is an Angelina Jolie's movie and something is telling me the Oscars like the movie because they like her and not Mr Eastwood.

Besides being one of the sexiest woman alive, she is also one of the greatest actresses these days. God is not really fair but who is complaining.

So I hope the movie and story will complement Angelina Jolie's usual best performance.

THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON

13 Oscar nominations and a Brad Pitt movie? Finally the pretty boy is getting his break and a promotion of David Fincher to the class of Oscar-nominated directors.

Still I dread to see this Oscar darling. Running close to 3 hours. I simply hope it is time well spent.

Well, if I can survive AUSTRALIA, I should survive this one. Anyway many claim the movie reminded them of one of my all-time favourite movies, FORREST GUMP. That should be make me feel better.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

A few months ago, who would even imagine this small British indie will be walking away with the most number of Oscars, including Best Picture?

A wonderful underdog story.

I always thought it is some very touching romance but a student told me it was more than that. It was about sheer poverty and cruelty in the slums of India. Okay and now I see why voters think it should be the best picture of the year.

Well, I am very intrigued and hopes are flying high. I do not supposed to expect SLUMDOG to disappoint me as much as BENJAMIN BUTTON did.

LET THE RIGHT ONE IN

Many critics praised this foreign-language import and said this is a better version of TWILIGHT. This makes me wonder why a horror fantasy vampire flick can get so many critics talking.

Uncle Roger's compliments are splashed across the movie poster. It is no ordinary compliment, it is extraordinary. Many critics even named this as one of the best films last year.

Just realised this morning that come 2010, there will be a Hollywood version.

Enough said. Not a big fan of horror fantasy but I am all keen to see what the fuss is all about.

DEPARTURES (OKURIBITO)

This year's Oscar Best Foreign Language Film, beating hot favourite THE CLASS from France.

While watching the trailer, it says the movie is the official contender for the 2009 foreign language Oscar. Ha! Well, it has gone on to win it.

Know nothing much about the plot. The trailer seems to suggest it revolves around a cellist-turn-casketer and his mentor. Will be expecting a lot of preaching about having pride in any profession. Very Japanese if you have to ask me.

Not getting a good feeling but since it clinched the Oscar, it should worth seeing.

GRAN TORINO

This Clint Eastwood suffered quite a bit of setback during the last Oscars season.

Compared to CHANGELING, this other Clint Eastwood had some really promising buzz but in the end, it all died down and the attention turned to CHANGELING instead. It went on to score 4 Oscar nominations.

I have seen the trailer a zillionth time. Every time I am in the cinema, they seem never fail to show this. Either I am sick of it or the trailer simply does not excite me, I am not harbouring hopes for this.

For the early Oscar buzz and how some critics love this so much.

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE

Not a fan of Harry Potter. Never was and never will.

I am totally not interested to see this. The one reason I am catching this is because I have seen the other Harry Potter movies.

The first one wowed me but after Part Three (whatever the title is), I am only going to the Harry Potter movies out of a routine.

Probably I will say the same thing when the last instalment (in two parts!) comes next year and the year after next. Yawn.

I hope the special effects can impress me. I am not asking for anything else more. And do not ask me if I have been following the draggy plot.

MONGOL

An award-winning documentary, including a nomination for the Oscars. Well, count me in.

The subject matter doesn't arouse much interest in me but you know what good documentaries can do to engage audience even in the remotest topic.

I am expecting to be awed.

Enough said. I am in.

I am sure I will be thrilled watching this one. It is Pixar. Hullo.
